My Hot Take on Fashion

Updated: Nov 17, 2020

I used to be a fan of the phrase, “Beauty is pain.” I’d use it as a joke, referring perhaps to the pain that my shoes would be giving me. I’d go for hours during the day wearing an uncomfortable sweater, all in the name of fashion.

Sometimes it seems that you have to have a ton of different clothes to have a ton of different outfits. There’s absolutely no way to stay on top of trends without spending a ton of money every few months, right? Wrong.

Minimalism. It’s what the French do. We could learn a lesson or two from them (and not just in fashion, honestly).

The secret, which I’ve heard about and discovered for myself and am here to tell you first-hand: have lot of ideas, but not a lot of clothes.

Really! It makes is so much easier. You should see my closet. There aren’t too many things: I’ve got some tops and some bottoms, and some classy things. Some staples. Some things to jazz it up (don’t forget about accessories!).

Example: Classy, silk knee-length black dress. For a night out: add heels. For a casual day at work or school: a plain white t-shirt under that same black dress, and pair it with white sneakers. (If you don’t have white sneakers, GET SOME. They are a game-changer, for real. I wear mine all the time.)

Anyway, here are some tips, for summary.

1. Don’t be afraid to layer! Throw a couple shirts on and try them different ways until you see what you like. Throw a turtleneck under an old t-shirt or wear the turtleneck by itself. BAM. Two different outfit options.

2. Thrift to get your basics! How easy would it be to find a classic black or white t-shirt at Goodwill? Grab an oversized blazer while you’re at it.

3. Mix patterns. Put your checkered vans with your striped pants. It’s fine. These days, you can get away with anything. Which leads me to tip Number 4…

4. Hold yourself right. I said above you can get away with anything, but that is only true if you carry yourself right. Rock your cheetah print heels. Wear the silk shirt.
